While our mission remains the same, we’ve changed our format to accommodate more variety, higher volume, and easier navigation. Note category headings at the top of the home page, which for the time being cover all the topics we will be writing about -- education, business, arts/culture, and City Hall. Watch for upcoming events in our calendar, and let us know if you have one to add.
In addition to news, features, opinion and commentary, we will offer still more opinion and commentary by way of regular columnists:
- Jim Thornton (“How We Cook”), who uses power tools and power mixers with equal precision and makes the best pizza on 63rd Street. (See his debut column in this issue, including an excellent recipe.)
- Greg Harper (“Missives and Misgivings"), AC Transit Board member, former Emeryvillle mayor, and co-founder of the Emeryville Artists’ Cooperative. He's also a lawyer.
- Tracy Schroth (“Whine and Dine"), editor of the Secret News and member of RULE (Residents United for a Liveable Emeryville) who loves to discuss the latest exploits of our city council majority over a good (or even bad) cup of coffee or meal. This is a column about local places to eat, drink, shop, exercise, get a cheap (legal) massage, etc. -- and what's particularly good (or even bad) about them.
- Ruth Major ("Children Matter"), whose column debuts this issue. An expert in early education and infant family mental health will write about early childhood development and related issues she is passionate about. She has been known to recruit volunteers to tutor and otherwise support the cause of helping children succeed in school. (And, last time she checked, was among the last three surviving British socialists.)
Featured in this issue are also Secret News contributors Bill Reuter, Ruth's husband and an emeritus professor of history at Cal State, East Bay; and Stephanie Prueger, a specialist in environmental marketing and communications who often writes about "green" success stories.
We hope to be a source of fun, interesting, and important news. But the Secret News exists to build community, give a voice to Emeryville residents often ignored by the people in power, and to hold that power to account.
